ALFA ROMEO AT THE 67th turin international motor show

The new versions of the Alfa Spider and Gtv will be centre of attention on the Alfa Romeo stand at the Turin Motor Show. This will be the first chance to glimpse the new range, which has now been endowed with more powerful engines. The exteriors put even more emphasis on the different personalities of the two models and a wider choice of colours is available. The interiors have also undergone major changes, with brand new trim and a wider range of standard equipment and options.
These new cars are joined on the catwalk by the Alfa 145 and 146, which have continually re-invented themselves to adapt to the needs of increasingly demanding and selective customers. One month after our first glimpse of the 1.8 and 2.0 T. Spark 16V engines with variable geometry intakes, we can now admire the Alfa 145 Junior, which will join its companion 146 version. Alfa Romeo is introducing more and more models specifically for customers who want a small car with plenty of sporting personality but do not see why this should mean less comfort.
The place of honour on the stand goes, as usual, to the Alfa 156, which continues to win plaudits from public and critics alike. Ninety thousand orders have been placed in just four months for Alfa's sporty saloon and it has collected 26 prizes from the trade press, not counting numerous other awards for design and technical innovation.
The entire new model range will be lined up at Turin: from the 1.6 T. Spark to the two track versions, the Superturismo and the Group N. Then, up on a stage, in a dominant position, surrounded by swirling lights and sounds, a demonstration model 'unfolds' to expose its interior and mechanical parts. The front and rear of the body fold back and the middle splits in half down its length.
The Alfa Romeo stand is full of new treats. Alfa red is the prevalent theme, with plenty of aluminium and glass to reflect and underscore the cars' technological sophistication.
As is now traditional, Alfa Accessories will be exhibited in showcases and many Alfa-branded items will be on sale in the Alfa boutique.
Internet stations are available to those who wish to browse the Alfa Romeo site (WWW.ALFAROMEO.COM) or the new sites created for the Show. Journalists will also be able to consult their own reserved site WWW.FIATAUTOPRESS.COM for car news and photos plus comprehensive information on Fiat and its products.
Another attractive idea for visitors to the Turin Show: they will be able to have their photographs taken alongside Alfa Romeo models and send the resulting 'post-card' with their picture by Internet to friends and relations.

ALFA 156
It was awarded the title of Car of the Year 1998 by an international jury of 56 journalists representing 21 countries. And this was only the best known. The Alfa 156 then went on to win a further 25 prizes throughout Europe, all awarded by the motoring press.
Many reasons contributed to this triumph. The Alfa 156 conceals a cornucopia of advanced technology beneath its appealing lines and strong personality. First of these is a common rail Unijet direct injection system, which represents a world first for 156 diesel engines. Regardless of engine rpm, this device uses an electronically controlled pump and injectors to produce a very high injection pressure and deliver minimal fuel quantities for more efficient, noiseless combustion.
A plastic (nylon strengthened with fibreglass) variable geometry intake system on the 1.8 and 2.0 T. Spark 16 valve engines also ensures the cylinders fill with air more effectively at all speeds to ensure more efficient engine response around town and on the motorway. The suspension configurations (double wishbone at the front and MacPherson strut type with asymmetrical arms at the rear) ensure the Alfa 156 excellent roadholding and handling.
Visitors to the Alfa Romeo stand can see how the Alfa 156's mechanical systems work in detail by consulting touch screens in the technological gallery. The main focus of this area is a demonstration car that unfolds to reveal the secrets of its interior and mechanical parts.
The team of Alfa 156s fielded in Turin is gloriously complete. The public will be able to admire all six versions (1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 T. Spark, 2.5 V6, 1.9 and 2.4 JTD). One will be equipped with items from the Accessories range. These will be joined by the two racing versions:
the 156 Group N and the Superturismo.

ALFA GTV AND SPIDER
An extended range with new, more powerful engines and more equipment, and changes to interior and exterior appearance. The Alfa Romeo Spider and Gtv have plenty to reveal at the Motor Show.
The most important engine novelty is the adoption of a 144 bhp-106 kW 1.8 T. Spark 16V unit, a development of the same basic engine fitted to other cars in the Alfa range. Customers thus have a wider choice of engine capacities that range from the 1747 cc of the new engine to the three litres of the 3.0 V6. The power of the variable geometry 2.0 T. Spark 16V engine has also been increased:
from 150 bhp-110 kW to 155 bhp-114 kW.
In Italy, the Spider is now exclusively available with a 200 bhp-147 kW 2.0 V6 turbo petrol engine (already fitted to the Alfa Gtv).
To move on to the mechanical systems, the Alfa Gtv 3.0 V6 24V is fitted with a six-speed gearbox with a sixth power speed. When this solution is fitted in conjunction with an aerodynamic kit to improve car Cd (black front spoiler and body-coloured rear spoiler with built-in third brake light), the car can reach a top speed of 250 km/h.
Changes to the cars' appearances are all aimed at more emphatically highlighting the different natures and personalities of the two cars. Exterior changes include new body colours, sideskirts, car-coloured bumpers and side strips, wheel trim design and a new 16" wheel design (17" wheels are also available on the Alfa Gtv). The exhaust tailpipe has also changed: chrome-plated stainless steel on the Alfa Spider and black for the Alfa Gtv.
The front shield has changed and is now framed by a chrome-plated moulding in line with Alfa tradition. A black, scored door sill plate bears the wording Alfa Romeo in aluminium-grey and a new black strip has been added between hood cover and boot.
The even better-looking interior features a slightly modified instrument and control facia and central console. The console houses an automatic climate control system and extends between the front seats, where armrests and small oddments compartments are located. The new interior outfit is completed by brand new cloth trim for the seats and door panels. Other details such as the gear knob, mats and boot lining have also been changed. On the most luxurious specification, which is incidentally also the most popular (it accounts for more than 70% of sales), seats fully upholstered in Momo leather are fitted as standard (with a choice of black, red and hide colours).
The option range has also been extended to offer solutions such as an aerodynamic kit to enhance the Alfa Gtv's sporty nature and devices designed to increase comfort and elegance. These include a radio-controlled door lock, special Blue Style and Red Style interiors, electrically-controlled heated tilting front seats and wiring for a car phone.
We have come up with an alternative to the conventional spare wheel, and it is fitted to the Alfa Spider and Gtv. It is known as a 'Tyrekit' and includes a sealant cylinder for temporary repairs, plus an electric compressor to re-inflate the tyre. Customers can order the kit instead of a normal spare wheel with no surcharge to increase effective luggage room by 45 dm3.

Engines
The new Alfa Spider and Gtv cars can now be fitted with an 1.8 T. Spark 16V engine developed from the unit already fitted to other members of the Alfa Romeo range. This power unit features a variable geometry intake manifold in plastic material (nylon strengthened with fibreglass) designed to ensure complete cylinder filling (with air) at all rpms. Torque delivery is thus increased at low and medium speeds (between 3000 and 4500 rpm) and power output is improved at high speeds. For the driver, this feature means a better engine response around town and on the motorway.
Careful choice of materials and component integration have made it possible to reduce engine and injection system weight by 4 per cent. The use of long life platinum spark plugs and hydraulic tappets with automatic tensioners on all belts reduces maintenance to a minimum. The spark plugs do not need attention until the car has been driven for 100,000 km.
Great care has also been taken to reduce the already low exhaust emission level. Solutions adopted include a hot lambda probe and a trivalent catalytic converter with a ceramic mount joined to a stainless steel front pipe. Emissions due to fuel evaporating into the air have also been reduced by fitting a returnless fuel supply system (this prevents fuel returning to the tank and includes a pressure regulation valve built into the petrol pump).
The 1.8 T. Spark 16V engine offers anyone who drives an Alfa Romeo Spider or Gtv plenty of torque, excellent specific power, a smooth, seamless drive even at low speeds, top performance and low emissions. Performance levels are also excellent: this 144 bhp-106 kW power unit can take the Alfa Romeo Spider to 205 km/h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds, while the Alfa Gtv is capable of 210 km/h with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds.
A development of the earlier 2.0 engine, the 2.0 T. Spark 16V fitted to 1998 range Spider and Gtv versions offers a substantial power increase. The output rises from 150 bhp-110 kW to 155 bhp-114 kW. Like the 1.8, this is fitted with a variable geometry plastic intake manifold and benefits from a similar weight reduction (4 per cent). The cylinder head is fitted with twin shafts and four valves per cylinder, with particularly compact combustion chamber roof geometry for high volumetric and thermodynamic efficiency. Together with other solutions (such as a crankshaft with eight counterweights and torsional vibration damper), the two counter-rotating balancer shafts minimise vibrations and engine noise to levels comparable to that of a 6 cylinder in line unit.
The 2.0 T. Spark 16V engine increases the top speed of both models: the Alfa Spider reaches 211 km/h, the Alfa Gtv goes to 216 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is unchanged at 8.4 seconds.
The 200 bhp-147 kW 2.0 V6 turbo petrol engine now available on Alfa Spiders sold in Italy is the same as the unit already fitted to the Alfa Gtv. Significant technical features of this power unit include a 60° V six cylinder configuration. This ensures the crankshaft turns evenly and maintains the drive as smooth as possible under all service conditions. The turbocharger also allows a drive torque comparable to that of an aspirated three litre engine at a lower engine speed. Car acceleration and pick-up are therefore improved. Top speeds differ slightly: 228 km/h for the Alfa Spider and 235 km/h for the Alfa Gtv.
The range is headed by the 3.0 V6 12V, which delivers 192 bhp-141 kW and takes the Alfa Spider to 225 km/h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. This is joined by a 220 bhp-162 kW 3.0 V6 24V unit. The peak performance of the engine is unchanged, but an Alfa Gtv fitted with a new six-speed gearbox and aerodynamic kit can now reach 250 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds. The credit goes to the sixth power speed added to the basic, highly reliable five speed unit. In the UK, the Alfa Gtv 3.0 V6 24V is currently available with a five-speed gearbox.

Specifications
The new Alfa Gtv and Alfa Spider range extension project provided an opportunity to improve the specification of both models.
The medium version, for example, now offers the following as standard: cloth seats and panels, front seat-belt pretensioners, driver's airbag, electrically-operated windows (automatic from driver's side), two heated electrically-operated door mirrors, central locking and check control for door and boot locking. All this plus: a three-spoke steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, provision for a radio with aerial and speakers, power steering, third brake light, headlamp alignment adjustment, fog lamp, ABS, cloth hood and an electronic key.
On the deluxe specification, this impressive equipment list is extended to include different items according to the engine version. The 2.0 T. Spark, 2.0 V6 turbo petrol unit and the 3.0 V6 12V are fitted with 16" light alloy wheels (the patterns are different on the Alfa Spider and the Alfa Gtv), automatic climate control system with pollen filter, seats and door panels in Momo leather (front and rear spoilers), red-painted brake calipers and, if required, 17" alloy wheels at no extra price.

Options
Despite this wealth of equipment, customers may nevertheless still wish to customise their car still further by choosing from the extensive options list.
One of the most significant is the Alfa Gtv aerodynamic kit. This includes a black front spoiler (in polyurethane) and a car-coloured rear spoiler with built-in third brake light (in polyurethane with glass fibre). This kit improves performance by 5 km/h.
Customers who opt for Momo leather seats (an option on the medium specification, but standard on the deluxe) can choose between black, red and hide-coloured with grey, red or beige carpets respectively. Stylish Blue Style and Red Style interiors are also available. The former features a blue facia, carpet, mats and door panel, while the seats may be trimmed with Momo blue or white leather (the hood is blue cloth on the Spider). In Red Style versions, the facia and door panel are red, the carpet and mats are black and the seats are trimmed in red or black Momo leather (the hood is in black cloth on the Spider).
The telephone provision offers a dual function speaker (radio and phone) on the passenger door and a new dual function stylus-type aerial.
The highly efficient new automatic climate control system with pollen filter automatically manages temperature and air flow, leaving the user to adjust distribution as required. Output increases from 300 to 350 m3/h and is ensured by a particularly noiseless centrifugal fan. Distribution is through 14 outlets. Passenger compartment air quality is assured in all circumstances by a pollen filter which traps dust and pollen particles. The filter is able to remove 50 per cent of particles between 0.5 and 1 µm, 70 per cent of particles between 1 and 1.5 µm and all particles bigger than 8 µm.
The Alfa Spider and Alfa Gtv are fitted as standard with a conventional spare wheel. If required, though, customers can ask for a special 'Tyrekit' instead at no extra cost. This consists of a sealant cylinder (for provisional repair of the damaged tyre) and an electrically-operated compressor to re-inflate the tyre (powered through the cigar lighter socket). Effective boot space is increased by 45 dm3 when this solution is chosen.
The options list is completed by: metallic or iridescent paint, 16" alloy wheels (on the medium version), an electronic antitheft device, radio-controlled door lock, heated tilting electrically-controlled front seats, passenger airbag and built-in radio with removable front. Options specifically designed for the Alfa Gtv include 17" wheels, an aerodynamic kit (front spoiler and rear spoiler with built-in third brake light) and an electric sunroof. On the Alfa Spider, the electric hood may be in blue or black cloth, depending on the interior.

Colours
Just as clothing colours distinguish people of different temperament and nature, body shades differentiate between the Alfa Spider and the Alfa Gtv. Each sports car offers a range of nine colours: three pastel shades (Alfa Red, Black and White) and three metallic shades (Proteus Red, Eclipse Grey and Light Grey) for both models. These are joined by two special metallic shades (Sargasso Green and Sail blue for the Alfa Gtv; Zoe Yellow and Victoria Blue for the Alfa Spider). Lastly, the iridescent colours Cloud Blue for the Alfa Gtv and Oasis Green for the Alfa Spider. The last two colours are referred to as iridescent because of their transparency and lightness. They are created using a special technique that involves the application of several coats: a primer, white or light grey undercoat, five coats of enamel sprayed on at right angles to one another and lastly a coat of clear varnish. The iridescent effect is produced by light ray reflection, refraction and interference. These physical phenomena mean that observers see different colours depending on where they are standing and what the light conditions are.

ALFA 145 AND 146
A new Junior is about to enter the annals of Alfa history. For an Alfa Romeo, this glorious symbol has always represented cars with a strong sporty vocation. Now it is the Alfa 145's turn to join its companion Alfa 146 version.
On show for a special preview at the Turin Motor Show, the Alfa 145 Junior features youthful, aggressive styling. The look is underscored by 15" alloy wheels with 195/50 tyres and an aerodynamic sideskirt with the wording 'Junior' to show off the side panel styling. The panel is body-coloured, as are the door handles and door mirrors.
The interiors also play their part and are in the same sporty cloth as the Alfa 146 Junior. The seats are branded with the Junior logo. The steering wheel and gear lever knob are leather-trimmed with blue top-stitching. The facia is dark grey, as on the 2.0 Cloverleaf version.
The Alfa 145 Junior offers exceptional driving satisfaction, with its wide tyres, steering system directly derived from top-of-the-range versions and high-performing 103 bhp 1.4 T. Spark engine. This power unit will propel the new Alfa 145 version to a top speed of 185 km/h and accelerate it from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.2 seconds.
Apart from the Alfa 145 and 146 Junior, visitors to Turin will also be able to see the 146 1.6 T. Spark and the 145 with the new 1.8 T. Spark 16V engine. On the market as from May together with the 2.0 T. Spark 16V, this new unit is fitted with a variable geometry intake system. The intake is controlled electronically by the injection control unit and uses ducts of different lengths according to rpm level. This system ensures more effective air flow to the cylinders at all engine speeds to increase efficiency and ensure a readier response.
The resulting engine is even more powerful and flexible than that on the previous range.
The 1.8 T. Spark 16V in fact delivers a power output of 144 bhp-106 kW at 6500 rpm and a peak torque of 17.2 kgm - 168.7 Nm-EC.
Fitted with this unit, the Alfa 145 1.8 T. Spark 16V can reach a top speed of 207 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 in 9.1 seconds.
The Alfa 146 1.6 T. Spark, on the other hand, develops an output of 120 bhp-88 kW at 6300 rpm and a peak torque of 14.7 kgm - 144 Nm-EC. It reaches a top speed of 197 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds.
The introduction of the new T. Spark engines and the arrival of the 145 Junior continues the process of renewal that has seen the Alfa 145 and Alfa 146 ranges gradually update their interiors, standard equipment, bodywork and power units over recent years to meet customer requirements more closely.
